Sport Events based on Sport Tourism can be developed, improved

By Fitzpatrick Ricky, ET

KUCHING: Sport events that are based on Sports Tourism has a bright future in the country, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Hj Abdul Taib Mahmud said on Tuesday. His text of speech was read by Datuk Amar Alfred Jabu in the official opening of the 2nd Borneo Games at the Stadium Prepaduan Negeri.“Any sports can be developed and improved so that one day it will be at a competent level with other prestigious sports,” he added.

According to Taib, Sarawak has what it takes to produce sports tourism with the vast land, panoramic views of the beaches, green forests, clean rivers, hills and mountains that captures the attention and inspires development of various sports that are based on nature, which includes extreme or recreational sports.Through wide promotion and publicity, especially overseas, I believe that the sport will be able to bring in more participation from sports enthusiast to Sarawak and other parts of Borneo that has its own natural attraction,” said Jabu.

Sarawak Intercultural Mooncake Festival

Mooncake, mooncake... i remember back in 2002, when it first started... those were the days, naive and full of energy... how i wish we could turn back time...

Monday September 10, 2007
Giant mooncake for charity
KUCHING: A giant mooncake will be baked to raise funds for needy children for the upcoming annual Sarawak Inter-Cultural Mooncake festival at Carpenter Street.
Chefs and their assistants will make the 600kg mooncake at an open area on Sept 22.
The cake will be sold to the public, with proceeds going to the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society, Sarawak Autistic Association and Children With AIDS through the Sarawak Family Planning Unit.
Coupons to buy the charity mooncake are on sale at several outlets.
The weeklong festival, which kicks off on Sept 19, has become a popular cultural and tourism event since it was first held five years ago.
Jointly mooted by former Padungan assemblyman Lily Yong Lee Lee and Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, it was first jointly hosted by the Chinese clans and several Malay villages in Petra Jaya.
Since then, the Dayak and Indian communities have joined in.
Mooncakes that are halal have become a unique feature of the festival, which drew some 15,000 visitors nightly in the past few years.
The Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry is the main sponsor for this year’s festival.

LANDAS

Hell, the LANDAS team were the Ferraris of the Sarawak regatta... they were hated so much so because they were the best and strongest team, with at least 5 teams in most of the finals, they were able to formulate team strategies( word on the ground or water...)
However, lately from 2006-2007, their strong hold were challenged by teams like Zecon and PUSAKA.
Much like the scene/story of the Formula One, it managed to change the senario of the regatta...not merely a one team show...

Pertahan Gelaran ' RAJA AIR ' Sarawak Regatta 2003

ENGLAND, ENGLAND, ENGLAND WHAT HAPPENED II?

When Carson let in that goal, my mind flashed back to Tanjong Lobang, it was an under-16 game, inter-district if i am not mistaken, the Miri goalkeeper was a tall fellow, he showed his skills in saving shots and stuff, then a long range try exactly like the croatia guy except it was in dry condition. He exactly handed the ball in, hands opened and the ball just rolled up and into the net...

England, England...now just put my bet on Portugal...

Sarawak proud of AirAsia

KUCHING: AirAsia's phenomenal growth has gained it yet another admirer -- Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

"Frankly speaking, I had found it hard to believe when the group CEO Datuk Tony (Fernandes) first told me that he wanted to buy 150 aircraft and that he wanted to develop Kuching into an international hub for low-cost travel."But today, he has delivered on that promise in just slightly more than a year and I'm very happy for this achievement. Sarawak benefits from his talent and strong drive," Taib said at the launch of the inaugural AirAsia Kuching-Macau flight at the Kuching International Airport yesterday. Also present at the launch were state Minister for Urban Development and Tourism Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, AirAsia X chairman Datuk Seri Kalimullah Hassan and AirAsia deputy group CEO Datuk Kamarudin Meraun. At a press conference later, Fernandes said the Kuching-Macau route was only the beginning as AirAsia had definite plans for at least three new international routes from Kuching in the next six to eight months.
"We will be introducing the Kuching-Jakarta route in the near future while the Kuching-Singapore route is awaiting approval from the government. "The Kuching-Perth route will follow suit, maybe within the next eight months."We need bigger aircraft for the Kuching-Perth route and, as it is, the world is short of aircraft. We are lucky to have placed our orders early and expect to have some new aircraft within a couple of months," he said.Fernandes explained that AirAsia was keen to fly to Singapore from Kuching to provide the necessary air connectivity for AirAsia X's flights from Brisbane and London.AirAsia, he said, would also be focused on developing the China market by introducing more flights to Macau and other destinations."The response from Macau is way beyond our expectations and we can only hope for greater frequency and a higher volume of passengers. Macau is an important gateway to China and we will certainly expand this route."Sarawak is an important hub for us. We started with just two flights a week five years ago and now we are doing about 200 flights a week. "In the next five years, we expect to do about 560 flights a week."

Gambier Street shopkeepers unhappy over road closure
KUCHING: The closure of Gambier Street by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) for the Sarawak Regatta has sparked displeasure among shopkeepers there.
Wee Hong Seng, the overall representative of Gambier Street traders, met with Kuching Resident Rodziah Morshidi and DBKU deputy director Lantak Amin yesterday to voice their unhappiness.

Wee, who is President of Sarawak Tourist Federation, told Lantak that the roadblock would make things worse for the shopkeepers at Gambier Street as they would not be able to receive any deliveries.
“How can they go about with their business if the lorries and vans delivering vegetables and other goods cannot send the things to their shop or market?”, he asked.
Wee added that it was unfair to close the street, adding that it would put the traders in a disadvantageous position.
Lantak, meanwhile, assured the traders that delivery vehicles would be allowed to use the road to deliver goods.
Gambier Street and Pengkalan Sapi walk paths will be closed from today until Sept 2 for hawkers to ply their trade during the Sarawak Regatta 2007.
Areas where hawking is not premitted are along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman (from Riverbank Suite, Riverside Majestic Hotel, Hilton and Harbour View Hotel), Jalan Main Bazaar/Waterfront to Tourism Complex, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg and Jalan Barrack/Court House.

Give your best...

Thinking back, when you think you are facing a brick wall or stuck in a hole..
the best thing is that you can depend on others who will give you their best to help you, no matter how small their contributions or support, their presence is just good enough to keep the sanity in your head... for those who go the whole mile for you are angels that came from heaven...
they laugh at your jokes even it is not funny, they are there to search for even the simplest thing, (like a file on the bloody table-buka matala!! butakah)... to clear up the mess and the best is makan-makan time, even when you are too busy for a break or lunch...you can depend on them to leave a portion for you, seriously, i wish that i took more time to sit and eat together,

some say i can't eat when people are laughing and talking loudly, which is not true, we enjoy more if the atmosphere is loud and happy... especially when the discussion is about goxxip...
i still don't know where they got the idea, or just them making the mickey out of me...

i won't name them here, but to all of you, thanks for everything, my time with you guys will be cherished forever...

Lots more to say, but it's better to say nothing at all.....

(ada makan sik? lapar tok, pening palak, palak nei pening ko?)

Website,website...

Regatta site to lure in more foreigners
KUCHING: Organisers of the Sarawak Regatta hope to attract more foreign participants to the event following the launch of its website.
State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh said last year’s regatta saw teams from Dubai, Kalimantan, Brunei and Singapore taking part.
“We look forward to their participation this year and we hope that the website will be able to attract more participants from around the region,” he said when launching www.sarawakregatta.com at the state assembly building here recently.
He added that the website, hosted and sponsored by the Sarawak Tourism Board, would help promote the regatta worldwide.

The site will be updated from year to year and will be linked to the board and Tourism Malaysia's websites and other websites of government bodies and agencies.”
The website features the history of the regatta, racing boats used by various communities in Sarawak, pictures and video clips of previous events, rules and registration forms.
The Sarawak Regatta is a major tourism event in the state and has also been picked as one of the 50 Visit Malaysia Year events.
This year’s race will take place from Aug 31 to Sept 2 on the Sarawak River here. Registration forms must be submitted by July 31 to the race secretariat at the Kuching Resident’s Office.

Sarawak Regatta lures record of 346 teams

KUCHING: The Sarawak Regatta, a traditional boat race promoted as a premier event in the state tourism calendar, will be grander this year with the highest ever number of teams participating.
The 15-event annual regatta, from Aug 31 to Sept 2 at the Kuching Waterfront, has attracted 346 teams, including one each from Brunei and Indonesia.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is expected to launch the regatta while Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng will close the event.
Having started more than 135 years ago, the Sarawak Regatta is one of the most popular water sports events in the state.

Brunei Joins Dean Racing For Sarawak Regatta
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - Despite newspaper reports in Sarawak stating that participants from Brunei Darussalam will not be coming for the Sarawak Regatta 2004 because of haze, a jetski team from the sultanate has actually arrived in Kuching for the event.
Hj Azhar Hj Aziz, the Personal Assistant, said the Dean Racing Team led by Zainuddin Dato Seri Paduka Hj Marsal and comprised of Baharuddin Zainuddin and Amirul Hj Sanip left for Kuching on Wednesday by road.
The Borneo Bulletin managed to talk to Zainuddin by phone who reiterated that despite local newspaper reports stating otherwise the team had arrived in Kuching yesterday to ripple the Sarawak River in the jetski competition.
He said the Dean Racing Team will contest the Jetski category commencing today until Sunday at the Kuching Waterfront.
"The weather here is good and the sky is definitely clear. Our team has participated in the Sarawak Regatta for the last 10 years and had never failed to bring back a few honours.
We expect to do the same this year," he said confidently.
Zainuddin will participate in the unlimited class while Baharuddin in the 1,200 class and Amirul 800 class. He added the course would be short and tricky with mangrove trees and concrete wall as obstacles.
Dean Racing Team is set to compete with its usual opposition such as Petronas and jetski teams from Miri, Sabah and Sarawak.
Sarawak Regatta 2004 is expected to be a grand and elaborate affair this year with more adrenaline-pumping actions as local and foreign participants compete for the challenge trophies and cash prizes.

Ba'kelalan

Back in Bario, people also used to walk across the border and vice versa ... well it was that way ages ago, who is going to stop it, build a Berlin Wall...ha..ha.ha..

On the supply trail

In this place in the mountains, transnational boundaries and border checkpoints matter little to people who go back and forth daily.

NO passports, no smart cards, no customs – just a nod and a wave, and you are in Indonesia.
This has to be Malaysia's most captivating border crossing – from Ba Kelalan, in the mountains of north-eastern Sarawak, to the Kerayan highland district of Kalimantan. Both sides are the ancestral homelands of two Dayak tribes – the Lunbawang and Lundayeh.

Manok Pansoh

Man, i miss manok pansoh, my missus's mother used to make once a month or whenever we came back for the weekend...yumm..

One of the best known Iban dishes is manok pansoh (ayam pansuh). Chicken pieces are cut and stuffed into the bambo together with other ingredients like mushrooms, lemongrass, tapioca leaves etc and cooked over an open fire - similar to the way lemang is cooked.
This natural way of cooking seals in the flavours and produces astonishingly tender chicken with a gravy perfumed with lemongrass and bamboo.

My Favourite Player

My favourite player( well among some), couldn't say much about his managerial career though, but i like his style, some local boys played like him but they tend to over shoot the ball "bola spital" expecting the other player to chase the ball...ha..ha..ha.. good laugh to see them quarrel over the type of ball, bol cam ne ko nak minta agik, sik dapat laju/jauh gikka?

1981 FA Community Shield (shared) (2-2 Aston Villa F.C.)
1982 FA Cup (1-1 aet, 1-0 Queens Park Rangers F.C.)
1984 UEFA Cup (2-2 on aggregate, 4-3 on penalties R.S.C. Anderlecht)
1988 Ligue 1 French championship

England international career (1979-1988)
Though regarded as a genius with the ball at his feet, Hoddle was considered an enigmatic and unreliable player to international managers guilty of over-emphasising hard work and physical prowess instead of technical ability and attacking creativity. He was included in the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cup squads, playing an important role in the latter campaign when England reached the quarter-finals against Argentina. Hoddle was one of the England players left behind by Diego Maradona as he burst from inside his own half to score his second goal in England's 2-1 defeat. Hoddle also featured prominently in the European Championship squads of 1980 and 1988, making his 53rd and final international appearance during the latter tournament.
Hoddle's talent is widely appreciated abroad; less so in England.
Arsene Wenger, who worked with him at Monaco, recalled: 'His control was superb and he had perfect body balance. His skill in both feet was uncanny... I couldn't understand why he hadn't been appreciated in England. Perhaps he was a star in the wrong period, years ahead of his time.'
Michel Platini famously attacked the English for neglecting creativity; had Hoddle been born French, he said, 'he would have won 150 caps'. As Jean-Luc Ettori, Monaco's club captain at the time, put it: 'For us Glenn was le bon dieu - he was a god. There's nothing else to say.'

Glenn Hoddle was a supremely gifted midfielder in the great Spurs tradition, and will go down in White Hart Lane history as one of Tottenham Hotspur's greatest ever players. His goals, many of which were stunning long range efforts, and moments of pure magic.
Hoddle soon developed into a world class player alongside Argentinian World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles. He could play a pinpoint raking pass to a team mate over 40 yards away, and also had the ability to create space for himself in a busy midfield with just a simple feint to the left or right. Hoddle's performances in the that famous white shirt, which was always hanging loose as he dictated the play with his vision and skill, epitomised the cool and glamorous image that was once associated with all the great Tottenham sides of the past.
Opposing fans loved to criticise him for his lack of work-rate and his unwillingness to tackle opponents, and unfairly gave him the nickname "Glenda". But with Graham Roberts alongside him in midfield as the ball-winner, who can blame him?
One player who jumped to his defence was French international Michel Platini, who said: "The English are so stupid, they criticise him for not tackling. But if he was a Frenchman we would build a team around such a genius - and he would win 100 caps." Hoddle made his full international debut in 1979 against Bulgaria, also scoring his first goal in the same game.He won the F.A. Cup twice with Spurs. His first winners' medal came after victory in the classic 2-match final against Manchester City in 1981, the second coming the following year against Terry Venables' QPR, with Hoddle scoring the only goal of the replay from the penalty spot to retain the famous old trophy. Unfortunately, injury was to deny him a UEFA Cup winners' medal, when he missed the 1984 victory over Anderlecht.
However, he WAS at the heart of the teams that finished third in 1985 and 1987, the latter being the year that Spurs suffered a shock defeat in the F.A. Cup final against Coventry, which was also his final game for the club.
The fact that Hoddle only played 53 times for his country was not through a lack of impact at international level on his part, but more as a result of successive managers failing to utilise his talents effectively - they just didn't harness his potential.
As Michel Platini said, the England team SHOULD have been built around Glenn Hoddle.Hoddle's career after leaving Spurs was one of ups and downs. He won a French championship medal with Monaco in 1988, before returning to England - after an injury enforced his brief retirement - to become player/manager at Swindon Town. Glenn Hoddle was a fantastic footballer to watch. He wasn't just about good feet; he also had a keen eye for goal, and a razor-sharp footballing brain.
There are many people who compare Manchester United's excellent David Beckham to Hoddle, in terms of passing yes, but the similarities end there though. Hoddle could dribble too, often leaving defenders in his wake with quick feet and clever body movement, these are the kind of qualities that set the genius apart from the rest - and Hoddle was a genius.

Nyaman wei... one of the things that i miss, not that here cannot find, not same ma...

It's a Pig's life

Did You Know?
1. If you farted constantly for 6 years and 9 months enough gas is produced to creat the energy of an atomic bomb. (I wonder who got paid to figure that out?)
2. A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes. (In my next life, I want to be a pig.)
3. A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (Creepy, but I'm still not over the pig.)
4. A male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body. The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off. (Honey, I'm home. What the ...?!)
5. The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field. (30 minutes ... lucky pig! Can you imagine?)
6. Some lions mate over 50 times a day. (I still want to be a pig in my next life -- quality over quantity.)
7. The strongest muscle in the human body is the tongue. (Hmmmmmm....)
8. An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. (I know some people like that.)
9. Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that, too.)
10. Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure. (What about that pig??)

Captain Gulzar managed to get some quality players for Sarawak not too long ago. Could have stayed longer to see some results but who knows what happens behind the curtains…

Too bad for the future of Sarawak football, they were some great talents out there in Sarawak, and I am not talking about places like Miri, Sibu or Limbang… I talking about places like upper Baram…Lio Matuh, I was on attachment with a Foreign-Local Technical Group collecting survey data up there when I stayed for a while at Long Tungan, there was a inter longhouse football tournament on and I would go and watch the matches…not like there was any choice up there( this was in 1998/99) one penan guy caught my attention, well not me alone, the whole spectators were interested by this fellow, he was Roberto Baggio… really he had long hair, wore Blue jersey(macam italylah konon) and he played skillfully and scored a few goals… but one thing was missing or two… he was playing ‘kaki ayam’… word was that everytime he put on a pair of boots, he could not play well… whenever they brought to play proper matches, the opposition players would aim his bare footed toes, so he never ventured out… too bad…

And to think Claude Le Roy spotted Simon Njangka playing in a village in Cameroun and brought him to play up to World Cup level… apa mau cakap…

Oh, when I was in Long Tungan, I met the father of Jalong Lenjau, a Miri football player, who played for Perumahan Kuching a few years back.
Btw, Jalong Lenjau was also a pendek-pendek, tagap-tagap type of player…

ENGLAND, ENGLAND, ENGLAND WHAT HAPPENED?

BOBBY ROBSON-fail to qualify for Euro 84

Can’t say much about him. However England lost 1-0 to Ireland during Euro 88. He had players like Gary Lineker, Bryan Robson(Captain Marvel), Glenn Hoddle, Tony Adams-great players at their peak.

England alive! Israel beats Russia 2-1 in European Championship qualifier

November 17, 2007
RAMAT GAN, Israel (AP) -- As Dmitry Sychev's 90th-minute drive headed toward the goal, it appeared England would be virtually eliminated from European Championship qualifying.
Then the ball bounced off a post and Omer Golan scored in injury time, giving Israel a 2-1 victory over Russia on Saturday night that could allow the England to join next summer's 16-nation field.

Maradona/Maran Tuna

No need to deify Maradona
By Gabrielle Marcotti, NST 17/11/2007

Diego Maradona was the greatest footballer I have ever seen play. His feats were so great that that they often slipped into the inexplicable, if not the supernatural. And. Like many outside England, I am open to the idea that the Hand of God truly was at work that day 21 years ago (if not on the first goal, certainly on the second).

But the actions of the “Church of Maradona” lie somewhere between the tiresome and the moronic. Its act is wearing thin. It claims to have 40,000 faithful who follow its Ten Commandments(which include such pearls as “spread the miracles of Maradona around the world” and “if you have a child, give them the gift of Diego as a middle name”), celebrate the Maradona Christmas (his birthday on October 30) and the Maradona Easter (the day he scored the second goal against England.

Last week, two couples were ‘married’ under the ritual of the Church of Maradona.

This is just silly. Even Maradona seems mildly embarrassed by this. There are many other ways to celebrate him, ways that do not involve making a mockery of the Christian faith.

Maran Tuna

Back in 1986, during the World Cup in Mexico, my grandparents were down in Sarikei staying with us.
It was also during the times of the RTM live telecast of the WC matches. As you guess it, Maradona was on everyone’s lips. Me old grandma was no exception. Away from the highlands of Bario, she and tepu’ delai’(late grandpa- God bless his soul) were introduced to the world TV.

Whenever Maradona’s name was mentioned, she would ask ‘is he our Maran Tuna?’. You see, some guy back in Bario, from Pa’Lungan if I am not mistaken, goes by the name of Maran Tuna. You can’t blame her, Maradona/Maran Tuna.
Say it once, say it twice… it sound the same to her

So, we would remind her that it is not the same guy… well, it would go on until they left for Bario, wonder if they went back and told people back home that Maran Tuna won the World Cup…he..he..he

Oh.. back to Maradona.. I would remember his shimmy, a left, a right and a run….
He was what you would call, back in Sarawak or up in the northern parts of Borneo, pendek-pendek tapi tagap-tagap…(short but strong like a buffalo) hard to knock of the ball… Maradona was about 170cm like Micheal Owen and they were the short men of football, but that’s about the height of most of the locals here…me included but they are some other guys back home (shorter still) pendek-pendek tapi tagap-tagap playing good football…

Back to Maradona… sorry seems going of course every now and then…
Adoring him like a superstar is one thing, but adoring him like a god is way too much… I bet he himself knows that… with all the substance abuse, health threatening moments and all

Well, you can’t away anything from him, he was the best player of the World…(through Pele’s fans would denied that) I think they are the joint Greatest Player…well, whatever…

The Blame Game

Is the Sarawak River Barrage To Be Blamed For Massive Floods?

By Linda Khoo Hui Li

Kuching, May 19 (Bernama)-- Is the Sungai Sarawak Barrage in Sejingkat to be blamed for the floods in 2003 and 2004?

The floods were the worst to hit Sarawak after 1963, where thousands in Kuching, Bau, Kota Samarahan and Sibu were evacuated. Many primary and secondary schools in low-lying areas were closed for days.

Kuching suffered severe losses in the 2003 and 2004 floods.

CRISTICISM, POLITICAL ISSUES

Due to this massive losses, the Sungai Sarawak barrage had became the subject of criticisms and was turned into a political issue.

An opposition party claimed the barrage's failure to control the river's water level as the main cause of floods in the state's low-lying areas.

However residents gave the thumbs up for the Sungai Sarawak barrage.

A resident of Kampung Melayu Tabuan, one of the villages near the river's lower course, said before the construction of the barrage, floods would hit villages located along Sungai Sarawak at least twicw a month--during the 1st and 15th day in the Chinese calender.

SUNGAI SARAWAK REGULATION SCHEME
Kuching Barrage Management Sdn. Bhd. general manager, Captain Goh Chin Guan, said the barrage, which comprises the first-ever barrage and shiplock in South East Asian, a fly-over and two causeways-- one across Sungai Santubong at Bako and the other across Sungai Sarawak at Pending, is part of the Sungai Sarawak Regulation Scheme (SSRS)

The barrage's design was based on the 1963 flood situation, with input from british and danish experts. The structure has shown to be effective in mitigating floods in Kuching.

If not for the barrage, Kuching City could have been flooded on a number occasions, Goh said.

He said a sophiscated software system, known as MIKE II is the 'brains' behind all data collection and information needed to operate the barrage.

He said real-time water and rain fall data is collected by the telemetry system and based on computational model of the river. The predicted discharge and water level are two factors in deciding when to operate the barrage gates.

REMOTE STATIONS

Remote stations at various catchment areas, stretching from Padawan to Bau, where the Sungai Sarawak Kanan and Kiri start will exact the amount of rainfall and water level, he said.

All the data is available on computer and monitored contantly.

Man and technology are pitted against nature to help control the river's water level.

"Although we cannot control the weather but at least we have put in a system that gives us early flood warning. By then we are able to advise people to take necessary precautions," Goh said.

HIGH TIDE

Goh said this process would take about 5 hours and last until the high tide when the levels of water downstream and upstream of the barrage are about the same.

He said the 5 hour process of creating a reservoir to receive the water from the catchment is sufficient to prevent riverwater from overflowing the banks.

However, the barrage has its limitations especially when the rainy period coincide with the 'king tide' days.

When this happens, the gates will be left opened to allow free flow of water. With that, flooding time will be drastically shortened and limiting the areas affected.

The massive flood is a phenomenon caused by heavy rain and the 'king tide' that hindered discharge of floodwater into the sea.

"This is the cause of the massive floods that hit Kuching, Kota Samarahan and Bau in 2003 and 2004," Goh said, adding that the completion of the barrage has drastically reduces sedimentation on the riverbank, thus resulting in cleaner and clearer water.

I rest my case...

Rain,rain go away

Everytime i hear rain drops on the roof, i can get a shiver.. especially when i am in bed trying to sleep.
No matter a light drizzle or heavy thunderstorm, i wonder if kuching will be flooded,
you see, I was involved in the Floods Operation Room in Kuching for 5 years... no matter how much you prepare, how you plan, during times of chaos, the important thing is a clear mind and not to be intimidated by the situation... be in control...

that was before i read this...

EDITORIAL: Stormy traffic

TUESDAY'S closure of the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel, or Smart, may have solved one major problem for Kuala Lumpur, but another was left in its wake.
The Department of Drainage and Irrigation, overseers of the project, contends that the Smart system virtually saved the city from getting flooded, and that if it weren't for the closure of the tunnel to channel excess rainwater away from the city, Dataran Merdeka would have come under water that evening. The flip side, though, is that the closure of the dual-purpose tunnel and the massive downpour worsened the city's infamous traffic congestion to near standstill. Still a small price to pay, perhaps, considering what could have happened, though a clear picture of how well the RM2 billion tunnel system performed in its first real-world test since coming online four months ago has yet to emerge. There are, in the meantime, some obvious lessons that can be learned from what has happened. Many who got stuck on the city's roads on Tuesday evening were either unaware or realised too late that they had driven right into areas that were in imminent danger of getting flooded. A more timely and effective heads-up could have been useful to divert motorists where possible. Traffic near Smart's Sungai Besi entrance also remained at an unusually slow crawl on Wednesday. Again, the reason was that many were unaware that the tunnel was still closed to traffic, as authorities needed more time to determine if it would be safe to re-open the tunnel to vehicles.
What Tuesday's incident reinforced, in other words, was that preparedness and prevention of floods in Kuala Lumpur require setting up and maintaining smooth and effective channels not just for excess rainwater, but information as well.Designed to be part of a flood-mitigation system for Kuala Lumpur that could also provide an alternative route and bypass for motorists, the Smart system was never meant to be a magic bullet for traffic congestion. The last time Kuala Lumpur got hit with as much rain was just five months ago, and parts of the city ended up flooded as a result. That the city did not suffer as badly last Tuesday is at least a hopeful sign that we could be at last getting on top of Kuala Lumpur's notorious flash floods. In which case, all we would need to do is find a way to overcome that other remaining perennial problem in the city - its infamous rush-hour traffic crawls.

No matter what you do, it is never enough... the best is you delay the problem and create another problem...

A touch of Borneo in the city
By YIP YOKE TENG
teng@thestar.com.my
In the wilderness of Borneo, warriors return from hunting excursions to the Baruk, or headhunter’s house in the Bidayuh language, to celebrate their victory, exchange stories of bravery and obtain information about other tribes.
In cosmopolitan Kuala Lumpur, urbanites can do just that, the modern way, at Borneo Baruk Club.

Striking: The black and white totem poles grab the attention of visitors.Conceptualised by a Sarawakian architect, the brown building at Jalan Kia Peng is an entertainment multiplex encompassing the facilities of Borneo Bar, BreadKick bakery and Rafflesia Restaurant.
It makes heads turn with its exterior replicating a longhouse with striking totem poles in black and white motifs as well as a uniquely structured Baruk house featuring a round rooftop and multiple pillars arranged in a circle.
According to spokesman Gaik Lee, the club positions itself as a catalyst for Borneo culture in the Peninsular. The concept was conceived three years ago when the owner attended a Gawai party in Sarawak.
“Extremely peaceful, awesome and lovely were some of the adjectives the owners used to describe Borneo. The two states were discovered long before Malaya was established but they still awe visitors till today. They have great potential and there is so much more to be explored.
“Borneo has one of the richest cultures in the world. We are making use of this location in the Golden Triangle to bring the culture closer to West Malaysia.
“We built a long house although it was rather costly due to the high ceiling because it is one of the most beautiful buildings we have come across,” she said.
While the interior is stylish, the club has a touch of Borneo at every corner.

Traditional: The longhouse-inspired building that houses the club. The modern decor is fused with ethnic motifs and woven works. A rainforest complete with flora and fauna adorns a corner with the sandstone of the Mulu Caves, inhabited by bats and spiders, decorates the seating area.
A host of antiques and ornaments from the owner’s personal collections are juxtaposed against posh couches and elegant chandeliers. The most interesting of all is a 100-year-old kayak suspended from the ceiling.
“The building and its concept came about after much research. We want to promote Borneo culture within an exciting and happening atmosphere without the place looking like a museum,” she added.

Fusion: The club fuses the modern and the traditional in an interesting way.Lee also gave special mention to the uniquely designed toilets characterised by bulky wooden bolts and imported accessories from Vileroy & Botch and Alape.
“The owner hopes to put Malaysia on the map overseas. This is the first club that adopts the Sabah and Sarawak concept and we hope there will soon be such spots in other parts of the world,” she added.
Borneo Baruk Club is located at No 1, Jalan Kia Peng, Kuala Lumpur.

Apa sudah jadi?

As stated by Beatrice in Planet Optima,

Eyh. I was still around when they started construction. It started in 2005. The 'mansion' is very close to Kolej itself. So, when the construction was going on, huge clouds of dusts would sometime got blown toward the school. So, whenever we go to the labs, we must close the windows and doors so the dusts won't get in. It's very annoying.

Crime Busters

Major towns identified as crime-prone areas
By Roger Francis, ET

KUCHING: Four major towns, Kuching, Miri, Sibu and Bintulu have been identified as crime prone areas which contributed to the increase in crime index rate in the State this year compared to last year, Inspector General of Police (IGP) told reporters after attending a police parade and closed-door briefing at Badarudin Police Headquarters here yesterday.“Athough the crime index rate has increased, the overall crime situation is still under control.“Motorcycle theft and house- breaking cases contributed the most to the number of property crime in the state especially in the major towns,” he said.Musa said as long as police concentrated on these four towns, the crime rate would definitely go down because other districts recorded low crime rates.

With such imported players Sarawak are expected to be more prepared to face the challenge this coming season. The first match for the season this Sunday will be a test on their performance in the eyes of the football fans.
