Sarawak Regatta 2008

Tuesday July 15, 2008 The Star

Sarawak makes regatta a national do

KUCHING: The popular Sarawak Regatta, which offers a rich purse of RM230,000 to winners, goes national this year.
Event organising chairman Rodziah Morshidi said all the states in the peninsula and Sabah had been invited to compete in the inaugural inter-state 20-paddlers race.
She said two other new categories – inter-varsity, and government and corporate agencies (both 20 paddlers) – had also been introduced in the annual event at the Kuching Waterfront from Aug 1-3.
“Entries were received from 283 teams (comprising 5,393 participants) as of July 11,” she told reporters at the Urban Development and Tourism Ministry office at Bangunan Baitulmakmur here yesterday.
She said she expected more entries in the next few days as nearly 400 teams competed in last year’s event, which offered some RM150,000 in cash prizes.
Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh later witnessed the handover of mock cheques from major sponsors.
Shell Bhd gave RM100,000 while Petronas Malaysia Bhd and Telekom Malaysia Bhd RM50,000 each.
The organisers also received RM30,000 each from Ta Ann Holdings Bhd, Global Upline Sdn Bhd and Murphy Sarawak Oil.
The federal Tourism Ministry gave RM300,000 and the state Tourism Ministry RM70,000.

SRB the new hero...

Sunday, September 16th, 2007
A regatta to remember By Dr Chung Tsung Ping
IT was a memorable event — the Sarawak River rippled with colours from boats of all sizes and shapes, while the Kuching Riverfront was filled with people from all walks of life.
Some knew their roles very well, some oblivious that they were part and parcel of an exciting event.
They all played a part as an important contributor to the Sarawak Regatta 2007. History has it that the regatta was held annually by the British since 1899 to encourage healthy competition among the communities.
The Sarawak Museum has documented the beginnings of the regatta and show how the communities have traditionally played a role at such an important event.
Preserving traditions, this year’s theme was aptly selected by the organisers as The Race for Peace. The 2007 regatta was also SRB’s first year as one of the main organisers working alongside key partners from the Kuching Resident’s office, the Marine Department, Fire and Rescue, and the City Councils to name a few.
This year’s regatta was also in a year where there was great knowledge sharing and exchange between the Marine Department and SRB in terms of the management of the event
Another first in this regatta was the Parade of the Oars. The oars symbolise the rules and regulations of the race and the commitment of the paddlers to respect these rules.
The honour was given to the Orang Ulu from Baram to present the oar to the Chief Minister of Sarawak. This is a commendable effort to keep Sarawak’s traditions alive and it is hoped that this Parade will be performed at future regattas.
To make this event successful, perfect coordination and teamwork was vital. Walkie-talkies were the main communication tools for the teams from SRB to coordinate with the other teams. It was a good opportunity to be able to watch and observe how teamwork came together consciously and unconsciously, especially by SRB personnel.
Each person and team knew their roles very well and automatically went into action to ensure that the job was done professionally and swiftly to keep the event running on time.
Even the Kuching Barrage under the care of Captain Goh played its role in ensuring that the river’s water levels were appropriate for the race.
At the grandstand, the ushers were in place to welcome the VIPs, including the event’s guest of honour, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and other guests for the launch and the Governor Tuan Yang Terutama Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin for the closing ceremony.
On the sides, one could observe busy caterers preparing the food and refreshments for the guests, police personnel on hand to ensure the safety of the crowd, and ambulance personnel in line to help in the event of a health emergency.
As the crowd cheered and enjoyed the races and event, the race crew worked hard to keep the jet skis in place on the race platform, the marshals on their vehicles to ensure that the rules of the game were observed, the rescue teams all ready for the man overboard and the judges with their watchful eyes to ensure fairness as its first priority during the races.
While it was a scene of hustle and bustle at the grandstand and the riverfront, approximately 30 persons worked behind the scene at the starting line. The marshals coordinated with their colleagues in charge of announcing the races. I learned that the starting line was one of the most important sections of the event. SRB had allocated approximately 30 persons to man the starting line.
Marshal 1 played its role behind the starting line, ensuring that the starting rules were not flouted by the participants while Marshal 2 kept a watch at the front of the starting line.
The umpire boats took over at the 100 metre mark from the starting line, racing alongside the participants to make sure that the rules of the competition were adhered to.
The atmosphere at the starting line was full of eagerness and anticipation as each team waited for the sound of the starting gun to kick off the races.
Paddles were all ready, submerged in the water; participants hunched forward all raring to be the first team to leave the starting line. The community lined the banks of the river to watch the races, cheering for their favourite teams.
I was informed that many came from as far as Sebuyau, an hour away from Kuching, Limbang and Lawas. Some came with their mobile homes in the form of boats equipped with cooking utensils and washing facilities making them known as the ‘gypsies of Sarawak’.
Some took the opportunity to have picnics along the river banks bringing families together to witness this annual event. As the boats reached the finishing line, the judges were on their best to catch the photo finish to determine the winners of the individual races including the one to crown ‘Raja Sungai’ (‘King of the River’).
This event displayed the team spirit embedded in SRB — or as the SRB Controller puts it “great things small people can do”.
One of the five strategies of the UNDP-SRB SIWT project includes a component to strengthen the institutional and capacity of SRB as the rivers gain additional responsibilities in the masterplan, which will be developed through the project.
This show of large-scale event management by SRB has helped provide early signs of potential capacity to implement Sarawak’s Masterplan for its rivers.
It was definitely a sight to remember as I was in one of the two large boats, one carrying the Governor plying the Sarawak River at the height of its glory. The people of Kuching thronged and filled all corners of buildings located on the river to catch a glimpse of the colourful event.
The commitment by our development partners, SRB was praiseworthy as seen through their daily regime of morning briefings at 7.30am for the three days of the regatta followed by the evening sessions of post-mortem meetings. We definitely look forward to the next Sarawak regatta 2008 which could well have an Irish team participating.
The other event to look forward is the Baram Regatta due to be organised and held in October 2008. Kudos to SRB and partners for a successful Sarawak Regatta 2007.

400 cubic metres of solid waste collected per day

By Gerald Chung, 29/1/2008

KUCHING: The 25km stretch of Sarawak River maintained by the Kuching City North Hall (DBKU) collects an average of around 400 cubic metres of solid waste per day from the eight traps set along the river.
Last year, over 41, 700 cubic metres of solid waste were collected from the river, despite facing an increased act of vandalism and theft regarding the traps.
This was disclosed by Environment Health Officer Basheer Ahmad, who is in charge of DBKU Drainage and Green Areas Management at a press conference here yesterday.
Basheer said that most of the solid waste collected by the traps comprised 95 percent vegetation while the remaining were domestic waste from residents along the Sarawak River.
“The Drainage and Green Areas Management spend around RM500, 000 on the river cleaning effort especially in maintaining the cleanliness of the river to avoid solid waste from floating down river, especially to the areas along the Waterfront.
“Hence, contractors and workers from the council ply through the river to ensure that solid waste does not pass through the trap,” he said.
He said that the Sarawak River, from the upper reach until the lower reach, was around 112km and passed through the areas of the Padawan Municipal Council (PMC), DBKU and the Kuching City South Council (MBKS).
“The main area concerned is the 25km stretch maintained by DBKU with every effort made to ensure solid waste does not float down river.”
Basheer said the traps, which were built at a cost of RM2,000, were set mostly at the upper reach of the river.
The sites where traps are in place to catch the floating solid waste are along Kudei, Gita Laut, Sungai Maong, Maong and Paroh.
The solid waste collected from the river is then dumped at a waste collection dumping ground located at Maong.
“The trap at the upper reach of the river will catch all vegetation and domestic waste and prevent it from flowing down river.
The final safety net will be the traps set along the areas near Satok and Sungai Bintangor,” he said, adding that maintainance of the traps required a lot of hard effort because, of late, they were the target of theft and vandalism.
He said there had been cases where the traps laid along the river were cut and the steel cables stolen, which hindered the cleaning effort carried out by the council. “The valuable part of the traps are the steel cables which help trap floating solid waste.”

I remembered during the regatta a few years back, this DBKU guy was picking up rubbish from the river at the pontoon in Kuching Waterfront, the moment he turn back on his route, the place was full of water bottles and rubbish again. Just the mentality of the locals....cis...cis...

During the visit to Sarawak, the team enjoyed a welcome dinner hosted by the government and also had breakfast at the Astana — the residential palace of the head of state — hosted by the governor.
Amer said: “We all had a fantastic time in Sarawak and it was a privilege to be part of the annual regatta. We look forward to returning next year with more training under our paddles.
“We have learnt many lessons from this year’s event — lessons you only learn through adversity as opposed to success. All in all, an amazing experience, lots of new friendships, greater cross cultural understanding and connection, and what a great destination.”

Coach Dave Martin said: “I could only ask 100 per cent effort from everyone — what I got was a 1000 per cent so here’s looking forward to more competition and expanding the sport throughout the UAE and Middle East.”

The Indonesian team took first place, followed by Brunei in second and third place, Singapore fourth and Dubai fifth. Amer said: “A big thanks to our sponsors who have been solid rocks of support in our quest to participate in the Sarawak Regatta including Malaysia Airlines, Dodge and Le Meridien Mina Seyahi.”

Well said, mate... in the face of adversity...your team made me proud...and sad on my part as not being able to help or do something prior to the race...
You were just too kind in your comments...A true gentlement..

Off to Sarawak

Forget breakfast in the hotel lobby. What about sharing your orange juice with the governor of Sarawak? That's just what a team of fitness fanatics from Dubai will be doing. The Going for Gold dragon boat crew has gone to Malaysia to take part in this year's Annual Sarawak Regatta. After the all-woman team crossed the line at an impressive second position last September, the state governor has this year invited the team from Dubai to enjoy breakfast with him — after the race.
Preparations
We caught up with the 19-strong team — this time mixed — as they made last-minute preparations for the race. Led by Julie Amer, founder of Mountain High and coach Dave Martin, the team consists of UAE residents who originate from 10 different countries. Under the guidance of team coach Dave Martin, the squad has been training since July at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi, the team's official training centre. Martin has had the team at the lap pool three times a week for paddle technique training and, thanks to the long awaited arrival of Dubai's first Dragon Boats, the team has been out on the water from 6am each day to prepare for their races in Sarawak. Gym-based training was run by Tracey Rogers, a personal trainers who was on last year's squad. Cultural exchange Amer said: "It's a great way to promote and strengthen the ties between Sarawak and Dubai and connect our unique cultures through our participation in the event. We look forward to meeting the other international teams and racing into modern-day adventure history by going for gold in all three races we take part in." Aiming high This year the Going for Gold team plans to participate in three races . These include: - Tourism Malaysia Cup — where they will be up against teams from Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei. - Women's Open 10 paddler category — where they will be up against local and international teams. - Men's Open 15 Paddler category — where the nine men from Dubai will join forces with five local Sarawak men to make up a squad to race.
The place The town of Sarawak is located on the north-western shore of the island of Borneo. The river is the focal point of the town and the Sarawak Regatta has been an important event with historical and cultural significance since 1872. Sarawak is home to 27 ethnic groups and is also famous for having the biggest population of Orangutan and the proboscis monkey. Also know as the land of the hornbills, which is the state's national bird, Sarawak is one big adventure playground with the world's richest tropical biodiversity and rugged rainforest wilderness. The regatta The Sarawak Regatta is organised by the Sarawak Tourism Board and takes place on the first weekend of September each year. Originally, the regatta was held to settle local rivalries between disputing tribes without resorting to war or head hunting. It's an offshoot of the Baram Regatta that originally saw huge war canoes bringing ferocious warriors travelling up the river.

My heart goes out to all of them... nothing i say will change anything... since i am not there anymore, i still think the organizing committee has to get the objectives figured out, international or local? technical standard have to be upgraded and it is not based on the events alone, logistics, after/post event services, the list goes on... full time secretariat at least 6 months ahead...bla..bla...
btw they did not return this year, news that they went to the Penang Dragon Boat Race, hope they enjoyed themselves there

LANDAS

Hell, the LANDAS team were the Ferraris of the Sarawak regatta... they were hated so much so because they were the best and strongest team, with at least 5 teams in most of the finals, they were able to formulate team strategies( word on the ground or water...)
However, lately from 2006-2007, their strong hold were challenged by teams like Zecon and PUSAKA.
Much like the scene/story of the Formula One, it managed to change the senario of the regatta...not merely a one team show...

Pertahan Gelaran ' RAJA AIR ' Sarawak Regatta 2003

I didn't know that...hmm...but it is an occurring matter...neverending story

Gambier Street shopkeepers unhappy over road closure
KUCHING: The closure of Gambier Street by Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) for the Sarawak Regatta has sparked displeasure among shopkeepers there.
Wee Hong Seng, the overall representative of Gambier Street traders, met with Kuching Resident Rodziah Morshidi and DBKU deputy director Lantak Amin yesterday to voice their unhappiness.

Wee, who is President of Sarawak Tourist Federation, told Lantak that the roadblock would make things worse for the shopkeepers at Gambier Street as they would not be able to receive any deliveries.
“How can they go about with their business if the lorries and vans delivering vegetables and other goods cannot send the things to their shop or market?”, he asked.
Wee added that it was unfair to close the street, adding that it would put the traders in a disadvantageous position.
Lantak, meanwhile, assured the traders that delivery vehicles would be allowed to use the road to deliver goods.
Gambier Street and Pengkalan Sapi walk paths will be closed from today until Sept 2 for hawkers to ply their trade during the Sarawak Regatta 2007.
Areas where hawking is not premitted are along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman (from Riverbank Suite, Riverside Majestic Hotel, Hilton and Harbour View Hotel), Jalan Main Bazaar/Waterfront to Tourism Complex, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg and Jalan Barrack/Court House.

KUCHING: Organisers of the Sarawak Regatta hope to attract more foreign participants to the event following the launch of its website.
State Urban Development and Tourism Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh said last year’s regatta saw teams from Dubai, Kalimantan, Brunei and Singapore taking part.
“We look forward to their participation this year and we hope that the website will be able to attract more participants from around the region,” he said when launching www.sarawakregatta.com at the state assembly building here recently.
He added that the website, hosted and sponsored by the Sarawak Tourism Board, would help promote the regatta worldwide.

The site will be updated from year to year and will be linked to the board and Tourism Malaysia's websites and other websites of government bodies and agencies.”
The website features the history of the regatta, racing boats used by various communities in Sarawak, pictures and video clips of previous events, rules and registration forms.
The Sarawak Regatta is a major tourism event in the state and has also been picked as one of the 50 Visit Malaysia Year events.
This year’s race will take place from Aug 31 to Sept 2 on the Sarawak River here. Registration forms must be submitted by July 31 to the race secretariat at the Kuching Resident’s Office.

Brunei Joins Dean Racing For Sarawak Regatta
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - Despite newspaper reports in Sarawak stating that participants from Brunei Darussalam will not be coming for the Sarawak Regatta 2004 because of haze, a jetski team from the sultanate has actually arrived in Kuching for the event.
Hj Azhar Hj Aziz, the Personal Assistant, said the Dean Racing Team led by Zainuddin Dato Seri Paduka Hj Marsal and comprised of Baharuddin Zainuddin and Amirul Hj Sanip left for Kuching on Wednesday by road.
The Borneo Bulletin managed to talk to Zainuddin by phone who reiterated that despite local newspaper reports stating otherwise the team had arrived in Kuching yesterday to ripple the Sarawak River in the jetski competition.
He said the Dean Racing Team will contest the Jetski category commencing today until Sunday at the Kuching Waterfront.
"The weather here is good and the sky is definitely clear. Our team has participated in the Sarawak Regatta for the last 10 years and had never failed to bring back a few honours.
We expect to do the same this year," he said confidently.
Zainuddin will participate in the unlimited class while Baharuddin in the 1,200 class and Amirul 800 class. He added the course would be short and tricky with mangrove trees and concrete wall as obstacles.
Dean Racing Team is set to compete with its usual opposition such as Petronas and jetski teams from Miri, Sabah and Sarawak.
Sarawak Regatta 2004 is expected to be a grand and elaborate affair this year with more adrenaline-pumping actions as local and foreign participants compete for the challenge trophies and cash prizes.
